Premiere English Skill

July 21st, 2011

British Council, once again, held a training for English Teachers in Jakarta. The training is called “Premiere English Skill”. At first, we were a little big confused with the theme. Since they came up with the name Premiere League. As long as we knew, Premiere League is a football competition in England and Britain. So, what does this football competition have something to do with the English teaching?

Being curious, I finally joined the training. It was held on Thursday, July 21st, 2011 in Universitas Paramadina, Jakarta. They invited almost 500 English teachers, starting from Elementary to High School English teachers. Unfortunately, only around 170 teachers came. They were from Jakarta, Bekasi, Depok, and Bogor. Anyway, it was big enough. I mean, handling 170 teachers surely needed effort and much activities so they wouldn’t find it boring. Thanks goodness that we had Ms. Itje Khodijah as our trainer. We often heard about her credibility in handling this kind of training. And finally we really got her as our trainer! 🙂 Bravo Ms.Itje.

As good as she is as a trainer, the training itself was really interesting. Even she could make us listen to her attentively. Her way of speaking is really smart, she really care about us. And in the training also we knew what is the connection between the English teaching and Premiere League. They took the Premiere League as the context of their material. So, we are not talking about football, instead we teach English through football. They are 20 stories in the large book and it story depicts one football club in Premiere League. There is one story that seems to happen in each club there. The material is really useful and helpful for us, English teachers, since it can broad our material in teaching English. However, we can give a little adjustment to our class. I mean we don’t have to really copy all the material available, but we can adapt it and put it in a way that suitable for our students. It is really interesting material indeed.

We also get some new horizons about teaching English. Ms. Itje said that there were 7 points to remember in language learning.

Language learning MUST:

1. Involve activities with balance of VAK (Visualize, Auditory, Kinetics) -> here, we need to move around, talk to the students.

2. Be in clear and meaningful context, eg: football, football players -> setting up a context that consists of opening, body and closing.

3. Involve a variety of activities (stir and settle)

4. Be based on real language use (there is no authentic texts has always have only one type of the text).

5. Involve the four skills interactively -> LISTEN the language and then SAY the language.

6. Make the students feel that the language they learn is theirs.

To make the English teaching to students INTERACTIVE:

a. Be in clear meaningful context.

b. Use visual support -> human brain work with pictures a lot.

c. Involve a variety of activities.

d. Be based on real language use.

e. Provide language prompts.

Each activity needs at least the following steps:

  • Preparation (Presentation)
  • Core Activity (Practice)
  • Follow up (Production)

In short, this training was really useful for English teachers. Beside the knowledge, we can make new friends from other schools. Nice place for socializing. 🙂

Marhaban ya Ramadhan

Malam nishfu sya’ban

buku lama ku telah ditutup

banyak tulisan indah

tak sedikit kisah sedih

ada pula tinta merah mewarnai

aku sadar

bukuku tidak seindah dan sebersih pada awalnya

aku berusaha menjaganya

mengisinya dengan kebaikan-kebaikan

mewarnainya dengan warna2 nan indah

memaknainya dengan sepenuh hati dan jiwa

namun apalah daya

kadang ada goresan tak rapi di dalamnya

tertinggal noda-noda merah kejelekan

tertuang penyakit-penyakit hati yang hina

membuat bukuku sedikit terlihat tak sempurna

tercoret

tergores

tersobek

tercabik

Ya Allah, aku tahu

hidup adalah pembelajaran

semoga dari semua goresan itu

mampu membuat aku belajar dari kesalahan

mampu menjadikan aku sadar

untuk lebih menjaga buku ku yang baru

Ya Allah, aku ikhlas menyerahkan buku lamaku

aku siap menerima buku terbaru darimu

Selamat datang malam nisfu sya’ban

Selamat datang duhai Ramadhan

Kami menanti buku indahmu

Terima kasih Pak Aris, atas motivasi-motivasi menbangunnya. 🙂

Scholarship Hunting Part 2

In my previous post on scholarship hunting, I wrote about my experience to go to Aminef Secretariat. Long journey it was, but at the end we managed to make it. Arriving there, we were welcomed by one of the staff there. We then waited for a few moment to have a staff come to us. After a few minutes, the female staff came and told us everything about the scholarship. Unfortunately, the one that I was interested in, that is the Humphrey Fellowship was meant for those who have structural position in her/his company or institution. In other words, I am ineligible to apply. But, she told us there is a scholarship offered only for teachers. It is called ILEP, intended for any teachers. Yet, this one is not a degree program, instead it is a kind of four-to-five months training programs. Well, I could try it, even though I am still looking for the master degree.

Still searching for the available scholarship this year, some friends advised me to apply for ADS program since it is open until August 26th, 2011. So, I browsed in the internet about this scholarship, and I think I am interested in applying for this one. I decided to take the application form in person in ADS office in Kuningan so I can ask for more information about this scholarship.

It was Wednesday early morning. Still with my friend, Titi, we had so much plan for the day. First, we went to UI Depok to have my certificate translated into English and also have them certified. It needed two weeks to finish, so I left my copy of certificate there. From Depok, we continued to DAAD secretariat in Summitams Building, Sudirman. My friend wanted to apply for the German Scholarship. So, we wanted to ask for much information from them. We took a Mikrolet 63 from Depok to Blok M and then took a Kopaja 20 from Blok M to Summitmas Building.

We arrived in the building at around 12 o’clock. We went up stair to 19th floor where DAAD secretariat sits. Unfortunately, the consultation hours is open from 13.30 to 16.00, so we decided to take a prayer first and have some lunch. At 13.30 sharp, we were welcomed by the staff there and without hesitation, we asked them so much information about the scholarship. One thing for sure is that there is only one scholarship available for me as an English teacher and it is conducted in Germany! In order to apply for this scholarship, I need to master the German Language first. It takes around 2,5 years to master it. And you know what? The age deadline should be 36 years old. Thus, I am ineligible for the German scholarship. 😥

Anyway, I still have one chance this year. The ADS Program! We then continued the hunting to Wira Usaha Building, Kuningan, where ADS Secretariats stands. We arrived there at three, so we didn’t want to waste our time since it is closed at four! We were greeted by the receptionist, the one that I can ask for the scholarship too. I was given the form and I studied it before I ask for some details. Going through all the pages, I took some notes of the points I need to ask. Feeling satisfied at the moment (although later there was one big question comes up), we decided to leave the office and went home. I feel confident and enthusiast to apply for this scholarship, since I have all the documents needed.

So, this is it! Time for a change! Time for the better future ahead! Wish me best of luck, dear God, family and friends!

Fighting! Fighting! :))))))

FIB UI (FSUI then)

It’s been almost twelve years since I finished my college in Faculty of Letters, UI. So many things changes during those years I left. Well, I occasionally went there to certify my certificates and transcript for some purposes. Each time I came there, I noticed big changes in my used-to-be campus. The very significant alteration is apparently the name.  We used to call our campus by Faculty of Letters, or Fakultas Sastra, since it covers many languages majors in it. However, the name changes into Faculty of Humanities, or Fakultas Ilmu pengetahuan Budaya. I had no idea what are the reason behind the alteration. One thing to be sur is for the better I believe.

FIB-UI Gedung 2

Another apparent change is the buildings. I found out that there is a new office in Building VI (it used to be the room for Ikhtisar Kebudayaan dan Kesustraan Australia). Now, it is the space for LBI or Lembaga Bahasa Internasional which provides the translation service for any document. I became aware of it when I needed to translate my documents for scholarship requirements.

What surprised me also is the pathway we take when we want to reach the campus. I mostly like to take the pathway from Gg. Sawo to Faculty of Humanities since it is nearer. It used to be the plain pathway. We just can see some dorms, typing rentals, photocopying  machine. It differs a lot now. Today, when we cross the pathway, there are so much to see and so many things to find such as vendors which sell food, drinks, accessories, books, and some other things college students will need for their daily life. It looks like a small market. So, it is so much fun to cross this way. You know what? You can even try one of the drink stalls which offers a really fresh and delicious drink! 🙂

Crossing the railway, we will continue walking. Now, the walking pathway is so comfortable with shady trees and nice pavement. Along the path, we can see on our right the captivity for the deer. It feels like we are walking in the zoo! 🙂 This is really a new breakthrough. Never cross in my mind that UI will have this kind of thing. Anyway, it’s good as long as they really take care of those deer.

The last but not least new breakthrough in our campus is the availability of bikes. The college students as well as employees in UI can use the bikes as long as they can show their students card or employee cards. It is really nice to have bike rentals, so everybody can support the slogan of “bike to school”! This is really worth to save our planet by reducing the use of motorcycles. Good job, UI! 🙂

These are only a few out of many changes I find in UI Depok! I think this changes really describe how development has really increased in UI Depok. Just really wish that no slight mistake is made in developing the campus.

Guru…jasamu tiada tara….:)

(How are you doing, Sir?)

Seorang kepala sekolah berpidato pada pesta perpisahan para murid-muridnya, ia berkata

“Seorang dokter menginginkan anaknya untuk menjadi dokter…

Seorang insinyur ingin anaknya juga menjadi insinyur…

Seorang bisnisman pun berharap anaknya mejadi seorang CEO…

Para tamu undangan makan malam duduk mengelilingi meja sambil mendiskusikan hidup mereka.

(Ia berhenti sejenak, lalu mulai…)

Saya membuat anak-anak terkagum-kagum

Saya membuat mereka bertanya-tanya

Saya membuat mereka meminta maaf dengan tulus

Saya membuat mereka memiliki rasa hormat dan bertanggung jawab atas tindakan mereka sendiri

Saya mengajarkan cara menulis dan membuat mereka menulis. Tuts keyboard bukanlah segalanya.

Betapa tinggi derajat seorang guru. Maka, berbangga hatilah dan berbahagialah, wahai para guru sejati! 🙂

Contemplation…

it’s early in the morning…

very early, in fact

my eyes wouldn’t shut

they kept awake to the moon

my mind wander far, far away

what is it like to be someone’s spouse

the real one

i experienced once

but i failed constantly

no regret, just a little sadness

i wonder if i ever feel it again

being a man’s woman

lose the feeling already

like it all fade away in a sudden

this early morning

with the eyes wide awake

try to think something

that bother a little in my mid..:)

Belajar edit foto :)

Coba edit foto, hasilnya not bad lah 🙂

tanjung aan, lombok

blackwhite crop
brownish

nice VW 🙂
